The category winners for the 2008 Costa Book Awards have been announced.
The winners that have emerged from the 2008 shortlists are The Secret Scripture (Novel) by Sebastian Barry, which was also shortlisted for last year's Booker, and The Outcast by Sadie Jones, who was selected as one of Waterstone's New Voices in the Spring of 2008. The winner in the Biography category was Somewhere Towards the End by Diana Athill, and the best book in the Poetry category was judged to be the widely acclaimed "poetic sequence", The Broken Word, by Adam Foulds. The children's shortlist winner was the long-awaited Just Henry by Michelle Magorian, her first book in ten years.
The winner will be announced at the awards ceremony at the Intercontinental Hotel, central London on 27th January, 2009.
The 2007 winner of the Costa Book of the Year was AL Kennedy for her novel, Day.
